Lubin has consistently ranked among the top programs nationwide for several years. At the Second Annual Lubin Forum on Contemporary Accounting Issues on April 29, keynotes from principals at the IASB, FASB, and SEC and high-powered panel discussions with industry leaders left no doubt that IFRS standards are inevitable and sounded the death knell of U.S. GAAP. [Associate Dean James C. Hall Dies at 64]

  Associate Dean James C. Hall Dies at 64
James (Jim) C. Hall, PhD, a leading American business educator who helped design and implement the innovative Executive MBA program, passed away on April 23 at the age of 64. Jim joined Pace in 1979 and most recently was the associate dean and director of Graduate Programs for the Lubin School, overseeing all of the School's full- and part-time graduate programs. There will be a memorial service at Pace on May 28 and a fund has been established in his honor.

JPMorgan Chase Alum Honored at Spring Banquet
Philip F. Bleser, AAS '81, BBA '84, MBA '94, managing director and CEO of the Mid-Corporate Banking Group, JPMorgan Chase, keynoted the Spring Banquet, an annual conference organized by several of Pace University's student organizations. The Spring Banquet provides a forum in which professionals from various business fields can share their experiences and knowledge with members of the Pace community. Bleser spoke about continuing Lubin's legacy of success and shared experiences from his life and career. Bleser was honored with the Lubin Legacy Award at the event.

[Beta Alpha Psi Sweeps Regional Competition]
BAP students at the Regional Conference
  Beta Alpha Psi Sweeps Regional Competition
Lubin's Iota Lambda chapter of Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) competed in the Beta Alpha Psi Regional Conference Best Practices competitions. The chapter participated in three competitions and won prizes in each category. The main competitor schools included SUNY Albany, SUNY Buffalo, Baruch, Fordham, Hofstra, Virginia Tech and Bentley. Iota Lambda placed first in "Impacting an Economically Distressed Community," second in "Financial Literacy for College Students," and third in "Strategic Planning." The first-place winners will compete at the National Conference in Anaheim, CA.

Matt Arburr, BBA '09 Drafted by St. Louis Cardinals
Matthew David Arburr, BBA '09, a Bristol, CT, native, was drafted as a third baseman by the St. Louis Cardinals in round 18 of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Although he has not yet experienced spring training and a full year of baseball at the professional level, he did play for the Johnson City Cardinals in Tennessee in the summer of 2007. Matthew is a finance major who has maintained a 3.5 GPA through three-and-half years of study. On March 5, he left for West Palm Beach, FL, to report for his first spring training experience.

Aaron Mandelbaum, MBA '08, is the winner of the Fifth Annual Pace University Business Plan Competition for his venture Umoja U. Umoja U provides industry specific and general life skills training to citizens of all ages. The organization creates skilled workers as it connects every facet of the job market to boost the productivity and quality of Tanzanian society. Aaron is graduating this spring with a strategic management MBA. The Business Plan Competition is held to foster the entrepreneurial spirit among students, promote practical business skills, and encourage the creation of new ventures.

Class of 2008 Receives Honors
Outstanding doctoral, master's, and baccalaureate students were honored in New York City and Westchester this month at the Lubin School's Awards and Beta Gamma Sigma Induction Ceremony. One hundred and four students were inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the preeminent international honor society in business. Daniel Scotto, MBA '76, founder and CIO, Whitehall Financial Advisors, LLC, was honored as the Beta Gamma Sigma Pace chapter honoree in Westchester and John C. Chapman, BBA '77, audit partner and board director, KPMG, LLP, was honored as the Beta Gamma Sigma Pace chapter honoree on the New York City campus. Both men were recognized for their accomplishments in the field of business and personification of the principles of Beta Gamma Sigma.

[Pace Advertising Club in Ad Olympics]   Pace Advertising Club in Ad Olympics
Pace University's New York Ad Team placed third out of a field of nine teams in this year's American Advertising Federation's (AAF) National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC). The competition, referred to as the Olympics of Advertising, is the premier college advertising challenge. It provides more than 3,000 college students with real-world experience by having them produce a strategic advertising/marketing/media campaign for a corporate sponsor. For 2008, the NSAC sponsor was AOL, a global leader in Web-based business.

PUMA Scores at the Big Easy
Pace University Marketing Association (PUMA) won two awards at the American Marketing Association Collegiate Conference in New Orleans held in April: Outstanding Chapter Planning and Outstanding Membership Activities. Nine Pace students were among the 1,200 students who attended the conference. The students were able to attend career sessions and network with business representatives and fellow marketing students. The students also participated in the Chapter Exhibit session, where they created an exhibit depicting their activities during the year, which included hosting the Northeast Regional Conference.

Andrew Varanelli
  Professor of Management Andrew Varanelli Dies at 73
Andrew Varanelli, Jr., PhD, director, Information Systems and Technology, professor of management, and a member of the Lubin faculty and administration for over forty years, passed away on May 17. Earlier he was chair of the Management and Management Science department for over 18 years, and was one of the pioneering forces behind Lubin's EMBA@PACE program. He was also an alumnus of Pace University having received an MBA from Lubin. He is survived by his wife Joan and his two sons, Andrew and James.
